Asian elephants are endangered due to the destruction of their living places. The situation is more blistering in Sri Lanka also. So, the elephant population is rapidly decreasing. Therefore government had to move for a preservation. In 1975 they stepped to it. Sri Lankan Department of Wildlife Conservation started a project of preserving elephants. Finally Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is the result of this major project. As a breeding ground for captive elephants, a nursery and an orphanage for disabled elephants, Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage fills a big space. World famous Born Free Foundation choosed Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage as their subject of the 2010 report. A visitor can visit there along the road of Colombo to Kandy easily.

The Area of Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is a 25-acre land besides Maha Oya River. Therefore this land is a good place to elephants. They hold over 100 elephants for caring. And furthermore there were more than 70 baby elephant births. Authorities provide foods and milk for these captive elephants every day. In addition to the authority, local donors also participate to donate to Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage.

Special Events

Bathing of elephants is a beautiful scenery. Mahouts guide all of the elephants to bathing like a parade. A visitor can see this nice elephant parade and bathing. In addition to watching bathing, people also able to participate feeding milk to baby elephants. This is a nice experience a visitor can get here. Meal times of the baby elephants are 9.15 am, 1.15pm and 5.00pm in the afternoon. By tracking those times you also can participate and get a more different experience.
